We have an amazing group of Fellows joining the NLC family this year, and we’re excited to learn more about the issues closest to them and why they love calling Philly “home."
What are you most looking forward to when it comes to the NLC Institute?
Jo: The best experiences of my life have always been with a group of caring, committed, similarly-minded people - and I feel that the NLC cohort is no different. I look forward to knowing everyone better, and translating the lessons from the institute into actions that will impact our city, together.
What are the issues closest to your heart?
Jo: I've worked in many direct service nonprofits, in youth development, disaster relief, housing, hunger. I find that many of these issues are interconnected, so there isn't one that is particularly close to my heart. However, I do love drawing these kinds of connections, and tackling issues in a collaborative way. I want to facilitate change this kind of multi-faceted way by bringing various stakeholders to the table in a way that is empowering for everyone.
Describe your ideal “Philly day.”
Jo: Since I am new to Philly, my ideal Philly day involves doing anything I haven't done before. I would love to be taken around to see/do what other Philadelphians enjoy. So far some of my favorites include: Reading Terminal Market, Old City Fest, First Friday, Scavenger Hunt at the Art Museum, Happy Hour food specials, all the murals and public art, and literally just walking around.
What do you love most about Philly?
Jo: I love that it's a small town/big city, that it's very livable (quality of life what what!) and that there's a sense of community - I'm always meeting people that I share a friend or a connection with.
